One of the prominent water sources in the Marmara Region, Sapanca Lake's water level has dropped to its lowest point in history, reaching 28.54 meters. This situation poses a serious warning for Sakarya and Kocaeli.
Typically, water levels rise in winter and spring, but this year they have unexpectedly decreased. Since 2023, water withdrawals of 15-20 meters have been observed along the lake shores. This event has resulted in a water loss equivalent to Sakarya's annual water consumption.
Prof. Dr. Asude Ateş from the Environmental Engineering Department of Sakarya University stated that the reasons for this drop are decreased rainfall, rising temperatures, and evaporation, emphasizing the lake's critical role as an ecosystem. Approximately 185 hectometers of the lake's water budget is utilized, with 67.5 hectometers by Sakarya and 30 hectometers by Kocaeli.
Ateş also addressed the traffic pollution caused by the highways surrounding the lake, underlining its negative impacts on the ecosystem.
The year 2023 has been recorded as the driest season in the last 65 years. Prof. Dr. Ateş noted that as the water level approaches the critical threshold of 29.4 meters, the drinking water potential should be prioritized. She emphasized the need for adopting efficient agricultural irrigation methods such as drip irrigation.
Ateş stated that there is a need to turn to alternative water sources to reduce the pressure on the lake, highlighting the importance of the Ballıkaya Dam project by the Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality. It is indicated that at least 2 years are needed for the project to be operational.
Emphasizing that water management is crucial not only for systems but also for individual usages, Ateş remarked that water will be a strategic resource over the next 100 years and requires careful management.
