By 2025, the trade volume between China and five Central Asian countries is expected to exceed the historic milestone of 100 billion dollars, reaching 106.3 billion dollars. The countries included are Kazakhstan, Türkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
According to data published by the General Administration of Customs of China, this significant figure shows that a large portion of China’s 71.2 billion dollars worth of exports to Central Asian countries consists of machinery and high-tech products. In contrast, Central Asian countries carried out a total 35.1 billion dollars in imports from China for underground resources, chemicals, steel, and agricultural products.
China is rapidly strengthening its economic and political relations with Central Asian countries within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at revitalizing East-West trade along the historic Silk Road route. The first leaders' summit of the China-Central Asia Cooperation Mechanism was held on May 18-19, 2023, in Xian.
The leaders decided to hold the summits every two years, and a secretariat was established in Xian. The second China-Central Asia Summit will take place in June 2025 in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana.
