U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned European governments to avoid retaliatory steps against his country due to the Greenland dispute. Speaking to reporters at the Davos 2026 World Economic Forum meetings held in Davos, Switzerland, Bessent stated that potential countermeasures from Europe would be 'very unwise.'
Bessent urged Europe not to succumb to concerns regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s intentions concerning Greenland. "I am traveling, so I haven’t had direct communication with European officials; however, I spoke with President Trump. There is clearly a lot of information. I think everyone should trust the President's word," he said.
In response to a question about possible counter trade measures from Europe due to the Greenland dispute, Bessent replied, "I don't think that would be very wise."
Furthermore, Bessent addressed comments suggesting that Trump’s policies regarding Greenland were related to the Nobel Peace Prize, labeling these claims as 'entirely baseless.'
Additionally, Bessent expressed that relations between the U.S. and Switzerland have reestablished a solid foundation after challenging months.
