General Directorate of Meteorology Announces 2025 Water Year Report

The General Directorate of Meteorology has published the 2025 water year report for the period of October 1, 2024 - September 30, 2025. According to the data, the rainfall in 2025 occurred at lower levels compared to the long-term average and the same period last year.

Striking Decrease in Rainfall

During this period, the amount of rainfall measured in Turkey was 422.5 kilograms per square meter, which is 26 percent below the long-term average and shows a 29 percent decrease compared to last year. This marks the lowest level of rainfall in Turkey in the last 52 years.

Regional Rainfall Changes

The change in rainfall by region is also noteworthy:

  • Marmara Region: Decrease of 34 percent compared to normal, 14 percent compared to 2024.
  • Aegean Region: Decrease of 28 percent compared to normal, 14 percent compared to 2024.
  • Mediterranean Region: Decrease of 31 percent compared to normal, 26 percent compared to 2024.
  • Central Anatolia: Decrease of 35 percent compared to normal, 34 percent compared to 2024.
  • Eastern Anatolia: Decrease of 25 percent compared to normal, 42 percent compared to 2024.
  • Southeastern Anatolia: Decrease of 53 percent compared to normal, 60 percent compared to 2024.

Rainfall Data by Province

Rize received the highest rainfall with 1812.1 kilograms per square meter, while Giresun experienced a 30 percent increase in rainfall. On the other hand, Şanlıurfa recorded only 182.8 kilograms of rainfall per square meter, and Hatay recorded a 66 percent decrease.

September Review: Low Rainfall and Temperature Data

In September, rainfall across Turkey was 14 percent below normal and 37 percent lower compared to the same period last year; however, no rainfall was recorded in Mardin during September.

Concerns About Drought Are Increasing

Meteorological drought is being experienced in the Marmara and Aegean Regions, while signs of drought continue in the Mediterranean and Central Anatolia regions. This situation stands out as a development that could affect agricultural activities in the area.
