American technology giant Apple has signed an important agreement for a renewable energy plant with a total capacity of 650 megawatts in Europe. The energy generated from these projects will be used to meet the needs of Apple's customers and will support various devices known to contribute significantly to the company's carbon footprint.
The energy plants to be implemented will include wind and solar energy projects. Apple is sourcing energy from solar power plants with capacities of 110 megawatts each in Greece and Latvia, 131 megawatts in Spain, and 40 megawatts in Poland. Additionally, 99 megawatts of wind farms will be integrated into the project in Romania.
Apple announced that it will invest $150 million to provide renewable energy to its suppliers in China. More than 90% of production in the country is met from renewable sources.
Apple's significant announcements generally appear on regional websites, but they do not receive adequate coverage in the US press. In the past, notifications regarding the company's renewable energy purchases were limitedly shared to avoid adverse reactions from previous administrations.
Microsoft and Meta have made significant investments in solar energy, adding over 1.5 gigawatts and 2 gigawatts of new energy capacity, respectively, within the year.
Solar and wind energy provide cost advantages compared to fossil fuels like coal and natural gas, and these resources are capable of providing power 24/7 with continuously decreasing battery costs.
In addition to the fast construction process, energy plants can be completed in a short period, which presents a significant competitive advantage for technology companies.
