Kremlin spokesman Dmitriy Peskov made statements regarding India's oil purchases during a press conference held in Moscow. Peskov emphasized that they are basing their remarks on the official statements of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs: "This statement is accessible to everyone; we take this into account."
Evaluating the declarations of US President Donald Trump that India promised to halt oil purchases from Russia, Peskov stated, "We base ourselves on the statements of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs." He also noted that China has made a statement on this matter.
Peskov recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Trump at the summit held in Anchorage, Alaska in August. He highlighted that this summit was extremely positive and constructive.
Peskov stated that the issue of Russian bases was on the agenda during Putin's meeting with Syrian President Ahmed Shara in Moscow. He remarked that they could not provide information regarding the deposed Baathist leader Bashar al-Assad.
During a press conference at the White House, Trump had stated that Indian Prime Minister Modi had assured him that India would stop buying oil from Russia. However, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has indicated that they will protect the interests of Indian consumers by altering their energy policy picture.
Moreover, it is reported that tensions between the two countries have increased following Trump's decision last August to impose a 25% tariff on India in addition to other customs duties.
