United States President Donald Trump stated that there could be a significant oil and gas deal between China and Alaska. In a post on the Truth Social platform on Friday, he expressed, "China will begin the process of purchasing American energy. In fact, a very large transaction regarding oil and gas purchases from Alaska is expected to take place."
Trump also announced that Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum will meet with energy teams to explore this potential agreement.
These statements came after China significantly reduced its oil imports from the U.S. at the beginning of 2023. In April, Chinese refineries cut their oil imports from the U.S. by approximately 90%, coinciding with a period of increasing trade tensions between the U.S. and China. As a result, imports of crude oil from Canada increased; in March, China imported 7.3 million barrels of crude oil from Canada's Vancouver port.
The Trump administration is promoting the sale of Arctic Alaska oil leases despite the government shutdown. This pending lease is being conducted in accordance with the law referred to by Trump as One Big Beautiful Bill, which was passed in July. According to this law, the Land Management Bureau (BLM) will conduct at least five lease sales over the next ten years, each covering at least 4 million acres.
A potential Alaska gas agreement with China could be a significant development in this context. During Trump's meeting with Xi Jinping, decisions were also made regarding trade, soybeans, and resources. One of the important outcomes of the meeting was the reduction of fentanyl tariffs from 20% to 10%; this suggests a potential warming in U.S.-China trade relations.
