U.S. President Donald Trump has decided to impose customs duties on eight European countries that supported Denmark regarding its policy on Greenland. This implementation has received warnings that it may weaken transatlantic relations.
Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement firmly protesting the customs duties imposed on them for opposing Trump’s stance on Greenland.
The statement highlighted the determination of these eight countries, as NATO allies, to strengthen Arctic security. Additionally, it was noted that the previously coordinated "Arctic Endurance" exercise serves the purpose of contributing to Arctic security.
The countries expressed their solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland, warning that the threats of customs duties could weaken transatlantic relations, and stated that they would continue to respond in unity and coordination. They reinforced their support with the statement, "We are determined to protect our sovereignty."
Trump announced that starting from February 1, 2026, a customs duty of 10% would be applied to the mentioned eight countries, and after June 1, 2026, the rate would increase to 25%. It was stated that this tax would continue until an agreement on the purchase related to Greenland is reached.
