U.S. President Donald Trump stated that world peace is at risk in the discussions regarding Greenland, announcing that he will impose tariffs on eight European countries including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, England, the Netherlands, and Finland. A 10 percent tariff will be applied to these countries starting on February 1, 2026, and the rate will increase to 25 percent after June 1, 2026.
The relevant countries responded to Trump's decision with a joint statement, warning that the implementation of tariffs would weaken transatlantic relations. This coalition of Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and England emphasized their determination to strengthen Arctic security as NATO allies.
The statement mentioned that participation in the “Arctic Endurance” exercise in Greenland had been pre-coordinated. The countries expressed that the exercise aims to respond to Arctic security and does not pose a threat to anyone. "We stand in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland," it was stated.
The statement also highlighted that the threats of tariffs not only weaken transatlantic relations but also create a dangerous downward spiral risk. "We will continue to respond by standing together and in coordination. We are determined to protect our sovereignty," the expressions drew attention.
Trump claimed that the U.S. needs Greenland for national security purposes, emphasizing its vital importance for the constructed Iron Dome. After meetings held in Washington, it was noted that the desire to capture Greenland persists clearly. Greenland had previously not accepted the sovereignty transfer made by the U.S., which became a factor that increased tensions.
