The administration of US President Donald Trump is reported to be asking countries for a contribution of 1 billion dollars to become a permanent member of the newly established Peace Council.
According to a draft charter published by Bloomberg, Trump will be appointed as the first president of the council and will have a say in the determination of member countries. In decision-making processes based on majority votes, each member country will have only one vote, while the approval of the president will be required for all decisions to come into effect.
It is emphasized that member countries will have a maximum term of three years, and this period can be extended by Trump. Additionally, countries that contribute more than 1 billion dollars in the first year will not be subject to this time limitation.
Critics are concerned about Trump’s efforts to create an alternative structure to the United Nations, which he has previously criticized. Trump has invited some world leaders, including Argentine President Javier Milei and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, to be part of the new Peace Council.
Furthermore, it has been stated that Trump also invited Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to be a founding member of the Peace Council.
According to Bloomberg’s sources, some European countries have also been invited to the council. However, there are opinions suggesting that the financing controlled by Trump is unacceptable. A US official noted that countries could join the council for free, but that paying 1 billion dollars would grant permanent membership rights. It was emphasized that the collected funds would be used for the reconstruction of Gaza.
