U.S. President Donald Trump hinted that discussions have taken place with Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro, stating, "We will see how this turns out, they want to talk."
Before returning to Washington from his weekend in Florida, Trump responded to reporters' questions at the airport. When asked if there were any new developments regarding Venezuela, Trump said, "No, there’s nothing," and provided information about possible talks.
Trump mentioned that he discussed "potential options" with Congress regarding Venezuela, stating, "We want to keep Congress in the loop." He also announced that he had tasked U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio with informing Congress.
Stating, "We don’t have to get Congress’s approval, but it’s a good thing to inform them. The only thing I don’t want them to do is leak highly sensitive and confidential information that could risk the military and the CIA," Trump addressed security concerns.
Trump criticized the previous administration, holding former President Joe Biden's government responsible for Venezuela transferring "almost its entire prison population" to the U.S.
When asked about Zohran Mamdani, New York's first Muslim mayor, Trump avoided answering, saying, "We want everything to go well for New York."
It was also noted that he had previously threatened to cut federal funds if Mamdani became mayor.
