U.S. President Donald Trump reported that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him during their meeting that India would stop importing oil from Russia. He stated that this would help bring an end to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War.
During a press conference at the White House, Trump discussed the tensions in the relations between India and Russia. He expressed his dissatisfaction with India’s purchase of Russian oil due to the war in Ukraine, highlighting that Modi's commitment on this issue was a significant development for him. “I was unhappy with India buying oil from Russia. Modi told me today that they will not make such imports.” he said.
Trump noted that he did not expect India to halt its imports of Russian oil abruptly, indicating that the process would proceed gradually, but he hoped it would be completed soon.
He expressed that India could facilitate mediation in the Russia-Ukraine War by taking such steps and pointed out that China should also exhibit similar behavior.
In August, India's decision to impose an additional 25% customs duty on top of the existing 25% mutual tariff rate due to imports of Russian oil had increased tariff tensions between the two countries.
