Trump Signs Bill Ending Government Shutdown

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a crucial bill that ends the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. The signing took place just two hours after the House of Representatives approved the temporary budget spending bill that had come from the Senate.

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed this significant package by a vote of 222 to 209. Trump's signature allows federal employees, who were left unemployed after a 43-day shutdown, to return to work starting today. However, it remains uncertain how quickly government services and operations will return to normal.

The law extends funding for the federal government until January 30 and will add approximately $1.8 trillion to its $38 trillion debt annually.

Longest Shutdown in U.S. History

The U.S. government shut down on October 1 after Congress failed to approve a temporary budget bill to fund the federal government before the new fiscal year started. As federal agencies lost their spending authority, the disagreements between the parties resulted in the longest shutdown in history.

Democratic and Republican senators reached an agreement on a temporary budget to open the government on Sunday, which marked the 40th day of the shutdown. The withdrawal of a guarantee for the extension of health care subsidies by Democratic senators was a significant step toward reopening the government.

The measure was approved in a Senate vote late on Monday night, passing by a vote of 60 to 40 local time.
