The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, during the budget discussions for the year 2026 held in the TBMM Planning and Budget Commission, answered questions from deputies and provided important information about Turkey's mining potential.
Minister Bayraktar emphasized that Turkey is currently in a position of being a net importer. This situation indicates that the potential of Turkey's mineral wealth has not yet been fully utilized. With the world’s sixth-largest mineral wealth, Turkey is working on various policies and projects to best evaluate this potential and develop the mining sector.
The Minister also made various statements about how Turkey could better manage its mineral resources. He pointed out that the share of the state from the total gold production is 31.35%, highlighting the importance of public and private sector collaborations in this area. Thus, the aim is to increase mineral production and maximize the revenue obtained by the state.
Bayraktar also mentioned the need for more research and development activities in evaluating Turkey's mineral wealth. The development of knowledge and technologies for the extraction, processing, and marketing of high-tech mineral products plays a key role in increasing competitiveness in this field. Therefore, public and private sector collaborations come to the forefront.
In conclusion, it is emphasized that strategic steps should be taken for Turkey to have a greater say in the future with its rich mineral resources. The future evaluation of rare earth elements and other mineral resources is one of the important factors affecting Turkey's position in the global mining market.
