In Malatya, one of Turkey's most important apricot production centers, the April 12 frost event has profoundly affected the region's agricultural and economic dynamics. In order to scientifically examine the social and economic impacts of this event, an important protocol has been signed between the Malatya Commodity Exchange and the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of İnönü University.
This scientific research will be a critical step to identify the causes of the decline in apricot production in Malatya and to illuminate the backward effects of agricultural productivity as a driving force. The frost event occurred at the beginning of the flowering period of apricot trees, severely threatening the development and yield of apricot fruits during this process.
Apricot is a decisive element in Malatya’s economic structure. Therefore, the results of the frost have great importance for both the producers and the future of the region's economy. The analyses to be conducted on the condition of the damaged trees and their productivity will provide important information for production planning.
The results of this research will provide guidance to apricot producers in Malatya, policymakers in agriculture, and stakeholders in the sector. Thus, the effects of this natural event will not be limited to the farmers carrying out agricultural activities here but will also permeate the overall economic structure of the region.
This scientific study will also reinforce the idea that apricot is not only an agricultural product for Malatya but also a regional identity, cultural value, and a tool for economic development. Therefore, analyzing such natural disasters and taking the necessary precautions is essential for sustainable agricultural practices and the stability of the agricultural economy.
