In the early general elections held today, 1200 candidates are competing for 465 seats in the House of Representatives, the lower house of the Japanese parliament. The election could change the balance of power in the political arena.
The current ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Japan Innovation Party (JIP) is contesting the election with the aim of maintaining a majority in the parliament. The coalition's success is critical for the continuity of the government.
Meanwhile, the opposition is not idle. The “Centrist Reform Alliance” formed by the Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP) and the Komeito Party stands out as the strongest bloc in the election.
The early general election is seen as a confidence test for Prime Minister Takaiçi. Takaiçi, who took office on October 21, 2025, holds the title of Japan's first female prime minister. The government dissolved the House of Representatives on January 23 to hold the early election.
