Emirates and GE Aerospace have signed an agreement for 130 additional GE9X engines to power its growing fleet. This agreement includes engines to be used on 65 new Boeing 777-9 aircraft, bringing the airline's total GE9X engine order to 540. Additionally, the agreement encompasses spare engines and a long-term service contract.
This announcement strengthens the 40-year partnership between Emirates and GE. The Dubai-based airline made its first flight with GE Aerospace engines in 1985. Today, it serves over 140 destinations across six continents and has the world's largest fleets of Airbus A380 and Boeing 777.
HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Emirates Airline and Group Executive Committee, stated, "Emirates is already the world's largest Boeing 777 operator, and today we are expanding our commitment to the program with an additional order worth $38 billion for 65 Boeing 777-9 and 130 GE9X engines. This is a long-term commitment and a testament to our partnership with Boeing and GE.”
Russell Stokes, President of GE Aerospace Commercial Engines and Services, also expressed, "We are proud to deepen our long-standing partnership with Emirates. This additional GE9X order from Emirates, already the world’s largest customer for GE90 and GP7200 engines, reflects their confidence in our technology and team. We stand ready to support Emirates in enhancing efficiency and resilience with industry-leading solutions and services.”
The GE9X engine is described as the world's most powerful commercial aircraft engine and the most fuel-efficient in its class. Used exclusively on the Boeing 777X family, including the 777-9 and 777-8F aircraft, the GE9X provides a 10% better specific fuel consumption compared to its predecessor, the GE90-115B engine, and its emissions are a generation ahead in technology. It is the most tested engine in the history of GE Aerospace and has undergone over 1,700 dust ingestion cycles to prove its durability in harsh operating environments like the Middle East. Like all GE Aerospace commercial engines, the GE9X engine is certified to operate with approved Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blends.
GE Aerospace has maintained a strong partnership with the United Arab Emirates for over 40 years. To support the country’s future aviation goals, GE Aerospace boasts over 240 employees, offices in the Abu Dhabi and Dubai Airport Free Zones, the On Wing Support Center in Dubai South, as well as engineering, testing, and maintenance-repair facilities. Additionally, GE Aerospace announced today a $50 million investment for a new On Wing Support facility.
