YouTube and Walt Disney have resolved their fee dispute, reinstating Disney channels on YouTube TV. With this agreement, popular Disney channels such as ABC, ESPN, and FX will again be available on YouTube's streaming service.
According to the announcement, ESPN will also offer its new direct-to-consumer service to YouTube TV subscribers without any additional fees. Additionally, YouTube will have the ability to offer select Disney channels and the Disney+/Hulu bundle in various packages. YouTube announced that it will provide all of ESPN's sports content, including ESPN Unlimited, to basic package subscribers without additional charges until the end of 2026.
The dispute arose due to the per-subscriber fees that publishers paid to display cable and broadcast networks on their platforms. This situation hindered subscribers' access to significant broadcasts, especially on U.S. Election Day and major sports events. Other Disney channels affected by the agreement included FX, National Geographic, Nat Geo Wild, and Disney Channel.
Disney Entertainment Co-Chairs Alan Bergman and Dana Walden, along with ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro, stated, "We have made an agreement that appreciates the tremendous value of Disney's programming and aims to provide more flexibility to YouTube TV subscribers."
Disney executives added, "We are pleased that our networks are back on air in time for fans to enjoy many great program options this weekend, including college football." This crisis regarding Disney's television networks raised concerns among investors, while YouTube expressed, "We apologize for the disruptions and thank our subscribers for their patience."
