Charlie Javice is facing a $74 million legal claim against JPMorgan Chase & Co. following her conviction. She is accused of billing the bank for personal expenses.

What Happened: Javice, an entrepreneur convicted of bank fraud, allegedly charged the bank for personal items like cellulite cream and luxury hotel upgrades. The bank has so far paid more than $142 million in legal fees for Javice and co-manager Olivier Amar's fight against federal fraud charges.

JPMorgan is attempting to have a judge revise a decision to stop any additional fees. The bank's attorney, Michael Pittinger, indicated that there have been "gross abuses" in relation to the case.

Javice's spokesperson, Juda Engelmayer, denied the allegations, stating that the expenses were billed by the legal team, not Javice. The legal team is accused of billing for hours that were claimed to be "impossible" for their personnel.

In March, Javice was convicted on four counts of fraud and sentenced to over seven years in prison. Despite her conviction, she continues to bill JPMorgan for legal expenses related to her appeal.

JPMorgan acquired Javice's fintech venture Frank for $175 million in 2021. However, two years later, it was revealed that the venture was built on inflated subscriber numbers, leading to Javice’s arrest.

Pablo Rodriguez, a spokesperson for JPMorgan, stated, "We are demonstrating with numbers that the legal fees billed by Charlie Javice and Olivier Amar are absolutely excessive and unacceptable."

Key Point: This case highlights the potential risks and challenges associated with corporate acquisitions. JPMorgan’s purchase of Frank in 2021 has gone poorly due to the inflated value based on fake subscriber numbers. The ongoing legal battle and associated costs further complicate the bank's situation. The outcome of this case may impact companies' future acquisition strategies and due diligence processes.
