Apple Inc. is preparing to make significant changes to its MacBook Air, iPad mini, and iPad Air series. The company plans to offer higher-quality screens for these popular devices.
According to sources, Apple is testing new products with OLED displays. Organic Light Emitting Diode technology is capable of offering richer colors and deeper contrasts compared to current LCD screens.
The iPad mini is expected to be the first model to benefit from these innovations, with an OLED screen version planned for release in 2024. This change provides customers with a new reason to update their devices. Although Mac and iPad sales are expected to increase this year, these figures are still behind the purchases made during the pandemic period of 2021 and 2022.
The renewal is also expected to result in high prices. It has been noted that the update for the iPad mini could be up to $100 more expensive due to the advanced screen technology. The company is also experimenting with a waterproof casing design for the iPad mini, which aligns with recent iPhone models.
At this stage, it has also been reported that Apple is working on a new speaker system that operates with vibrations to ensure the waterproof design. This design eliminates the possibility of water ingress while presenting a different approach in terms of space.
With the latest updates, the iPad mini was updated late in 2024 with a faster processor and support for the Apple Intelligence platform. However, these renewal plans are not finalized and may change during the product development process. For example, the release date of the 18-inch foldable iPad project has recently been postponed to 2029.
A spokesperson for Apple, based in Cupertino, California, did not provide any comments.
On the other hand, it has been stated that the new iPad Air model, set to be released in the spring, will still use LCD, while future generations are planned to transition to OLED technology. The iPad Pro, after being updated with the M5 chip last week, gained an OLED screen in May 2024.
In the upcoming period, the iPad Air series is expected to be the last tablet model to use an OLED screen. Currently, there are no such plans for the entry-level iPad.
The MacBook Pro is preparing to be the first Mac model to use an OLED screen in its next design. Additionally, early-stage work has started on this technology for the MacBook Air, one of its most popular laptops. However, these updates are not expected to be released before 2028. The M5 chip will be included in the current MacBook Air design in the spring of 2026, but LCD screens will still be used.
The transition to OLED in the industry is still in the early stages. Most tablets and laptops still rely on LCD screens; only high-quality models, such as the iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy Tab S11, are using OLED.
Apple began using OLED screens with the Apple Watch in 2015. In 2017, the company introduced this technology in smartphones with the iPhone X. Earlier this year, the company also stopped selling its last LCD iPhone model.
The Vision Pro headset has also integrated micro-OLED type technology into its screens.
