US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Saturday that the US does not want the sanctions imposed on Colombian President Gustavo Petro to harm the Colombian people and economy.
In a statement made on Friday, individuals such as Petro, his wife Veronica del Socorro Alcocer Garcia, his son Nicolas Petro, and Colombian Interior Minister Armando Benedetti were added to the "specially designated citizens list." It was announced that sanctions would be imposed on these individuals.
While speaking to reporters en route from Israel to Qatar, Rubio emphasized the strong relationships that the US has with the Colombian people and many institutions in the country.
Meanwhile, the US military is increasing its activities in the South Caribbean, carrying out attacks on ships in international waters allegedly carrying drugs without providing evidence. After Colombian President Donald Trump accused Petro, a left-leaning leader, of murder due to these attacks, he referred to Petro as an "illegal drug leader."
Referring to the sanctions against Petro, Rubio stated, "This is not an issue between the US and Colombia. The Trump administration reacted to a foreign leader it believed was exhibiting hostile behavior. However, we keep this separate from the Colombian people. Therefore, we are not imposing tariffs. We do not want to harm the Colombian economy."
