The Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Turkey has taken an important step regarding products deemed to pose a high health risk. With the newly published directive, the importation of shoes, toys, and leather goods into Turkey via postal and express cargo services has been restricted with a simplified customs declaration.
In a written statement by the Ministry, it was revealed that out of 182 products examined as part of inspections and laboratory analyses conducted on various e-commerce platforms, 148 of these products did not meet product safety criteria.
The statement noted, “In the inspections, shoes, toys, and leather goods (bags and suitcases made of real and synthetic leather) were found to contain toxic substances such as phthalates, lead, cadmium, and PAHs well above legal limits.” This situation poses a significant threat to consumer health, prompting immediate intervention by the ministry.
