Former U.S. President Donald Trump held an important press conference at the White House regarding the increasing trade tensions between the U.S. and China.
In response to a question about whether they will enter a long-term trade war with China if no agreement is reached after his upcoming meeting with Xi Jinping, Trump stated, "We are already in it. If it weren't for our tariffs, we wouldn't have any defense."
Trump emphasized that tariffs are critical from both an economic and national security perspective, arguing that previous administrations should not have resorted to tariffs.
He highlighted that tariffs have generated trillions of dollars in revenue and claimed that this practice also supports "the preservation of peace." He asserted, "Tariffs have played an important role in ending wars," claiming that there are no remaining wars except for Russia.
Trump remarked that many people do not understand tariffs and that this could have negative repercussions for their country. "There is a major tariff case at the Supreme Court, and it is one of the most important cases in our nation's history. If we lose this case, we will face a long period of weakness and financial complexity," he stated.
The President criticized the tariffs imposed by other countries on the U.S., stating that it would be a "disaster" for the country if they did not have tariffs in place. Trump expressed his intention to attend the Supreme Court to observe this case. "I have never done this before, but I believe this is one of the most important cases of all time," he said.
