Amazon has taken a significant step in the field of children's health by announcing a fee-per-visit virtual health service called Amazon One Medical for children aged 2 to 11. In this innovative service, message-based consultations start at just $29, while video consultations begin at $49.
Amazon One Medical does not require any membership for access. This service can treat more than 10 skin conditions, including eye diseases, lice, and eczema in children. It also covers health services such as the renewal of EpiPens and asthma medications. Amazon plans to roll out similar virtual health services for adults in 2024.
Dr. Natasha Bhuyan, Family Physician and National Medical Director of Amazon One Medical, stated, "This service is designed not to replace the relationship with the family’s pediatrician, but to provide a quick solution for parents seeking assistance through One Medical membership."
Amazon's new venture comes with the shrinking market share of major retail health service providers such as Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart. Last week, prescription drug kiosks that began in Los Angeles include common medications such as antibiotics, inhalers, and blood pressure drugs.
These new kiosks may put traditional pharmacies in a tough spot. For example, Rite Aid is closing its stores, while CVS has closed over 1,000 locations since 2021, and Walgreens shut down 500 stores last year.
