In the USA, popular social media platforms such as TikTok, Meta, and YouTube are facing a jury trial over claims that they harm the mental health of young people. This marks the companies' first time facing such a legal process in court.
The lawsuit was filed after a family alleged that their daughter experienced self-harm and suicidal thoughts through these platforms. The allegation that social media companies have intentionally developed their content in a addictive manner is at the center of the lawsuit.
This trial, set to take place in California, will begin on January 27. During this trial, senior executives of the social media giants will also be called as witnesses. The demand for financial compensation was expressed without specifying an amount, but this case is expected to set a precedent for thousands of lawsuits filed against TikTok, Meta, YouTube, and Snapchat.
According to media reports, social media companies could face billions of dollars in compensation as a result of such lawsuits. Executives who have previously faced similar situations have had to testify before the US Congress and apologize to parents.
