The leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, Sanae Takaichi, became the country's first female prime minister by winning the vote held in the 465-seat lower house.
Takaichi secured the majority by receiving 237 votes in the lower house voting. This success paves the way for her to become the country's 104th prime minister. Takaichi is expected to officially assume office during the oath ceremony held later in the day.
Following the lower house process, the approval process in the upper house is also expected to proceed smoothly. Takaichi will replace Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who resigned after recent election defeats.
