According to Bloomberg News, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation is continuing work on legal regulations to increase the import quota for tomatoes from Turkey by 100,000 tons, raising the total to 600,000 tons.
Following the downing of a Russian warplane in Syria in the fall of 2015, Russia began implementing a quota on tomato imports from Turkey. Subsequently, as of January 1, 2016, all vegetable and fruit imports from Turkey were banned. After long negotiations, tomato shipments between Turkey and Russia resumed on November 1, 2017.
This new regulation is expected to present a significant opportunity for Turkey's tomato exports. If the proposal is approved, it will become possible to increase trade volume and strengthen commercial relations between the two countries.
