The General Director of Russia's State Nuclear Energy Corporation Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, warned that Europe's (EU) efforts to ban nuclear fuel imports from Russia could have serious consequences. Likhachev stated that this ban could threaten the safety of nuclear facilities in Europe.
Speaking to reporters in Moscow, Likhachev drew attention to the potential negative impact of the ban on the European economy. "Most importantly, the fact that nuclear fuel is a fundamental component of the nuclear cycle. Therefore, safety issues are directly related to this ban," he said. The Rosatom General Director emphasized that nuclear and radiation safety is a priority issue.
Likhachev expressed the concerns of Rosatom and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding this situation, stating, "I hope that common sense will prevail instead of increasing anti-Russia sanctions," he said. European Union officials have reported that they are also considering new sanctions on nuclear fuel imports following the sanctions imposed on Russian natural gas.
Rosatom's warning brings nuclear safety and economic stability issues back to the forefront. The steps Europe will take regarding energy security will be determined in the coming days.
