Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF), Friedrich Merz stated that the international order based on international law, shaped over the last thirty years, is facing different challenges. Merz said, "Today, the foundations of this order have been seriously shaken."
In response to former US President Donald Trump's tariff threats, Merz stated, "New customs duties have the potential to disrupt the fundamental dynamics of transatlantic relations. Europe's response to this situation will be united, calm, measured, and resolute."
Merz expressed his satisfaction that the United States is taking the threat posed by Russia in the Arctic seriously. He emphasized that as NATO allies in Europe, they believe they need to take on greater responsibility for enhancing the security of the North Pole.
Following Trump's threats, the European Union (EU) suspended the trade agreement with the US, which many of its members considered unfair. This agreement was intended to impose a 15% customs duty on most exports to the US, and a 50% duty on steel and aluminum.
In response to Trump's comments regarding a framework being set for Greenland, Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that her country is "open to negotiations on all political issues such as security, investments, and economics, but will not negotiate on sovereignty."
