Italy raised the issue of customs tariff negotiations between the EU and the USA during meetings held in its capital, Rome. The discussions between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and European Commission Vice President for Trade Sefcovic focused on the threat of additional tariffs reaching up to 107% faced by Italian pasta producers.
Tajani stated that these kinds of tariffs from the USA pose a serious threat to Italian trade, saying, "We must intensify our efforts to protect sectors not yet included in the 15% framework." He emphasized that areas such as steel, aluminum, machinery, and olive oil are at risk of being affected by this harm.
The decision by the US Department of Commerce to impose a 107% tariff on a total of 13 Italian pasta producers due to dumping was also a focal point of the discussions. Tajani noted that Italian producers are not engaged in dumping practices and requested support aimed at protecting EU member firms.
Sefcovic stated, "We will increase our efforts regarding matters related to pasta. We will remain in constant communication with US authorities," highlighting the importance of negotiations on this issue. It is expected that Italy's total pasta exports will exceed 4 billion euros in 2024.
