The United Nations (UN) has decided to extend the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) until October 31, 2026. This significant development was approved through a vote held in the UN Security Council, and as a result, UNSMIL’s mandate has been extended for one year.
A draft prepared by the United Kingdom was unanimously accepted by the 15-member UN Security Council. James Kariuki, the Deputy Permanent Representative of the UK to the UN, evaluated this important decision, stating, "This mandate plays a crucial role in supporting the Libyan people in achieving the peace, stability, and democratic governance they deserve."
UNSMIL was established on September 16, 2011, to support Libya’s political transition process. This special political mission undertakes important tasks to end the division among military forces and economic institutions in Libya. The mission is expected to contribute significantly to the peace process by playing a mediation role between the conflicting parties.
The conflicts that began in Libya in 2011 have created a deep political and economic crisis in the country. The mission of UNSMIL is of critical importance to help find a way out of this crisis and to ensure that the Libyan people reach a peaceful future.
