Harvard University Increases Investment in BlackRock Significantly

Harvard University drew attention by increasing its investment in BlackRock's Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) by 250% in the third quarter of 2025. The university, which began investing in this fund earlier in the year, announced in its latest regulatory filing that as of September 30, it held a total of 6.8 million shares worth $442.8 million in the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT).

BlackRock Bitcoin ETF Investment

The university's decision to increase its investment in BlackRock's ETF indicates a growing confidence among major investors in Bitcoin. When Harvard entered its IBIT position in August, it held approximately 1.9 million shares worth about $116.6 million. Information expert Eric Balchunas noted that it is rare for an endowment fund to invest in an ETF, and this situation represents a significant endorsement for the ETF.

Harvard's Other Investments

Alongside this large Bitcoin investment, Harvard University has also directed its resources toward strengthening its portfolio in other investment areas. In the technology sector, it made significant investments in leading Turkish companies such as Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Google's parent company Alphabet. Additionally, it opened a new position worth $16.8 million in the fintech company Klarna and purchased $59.1 million worth of shares in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.

Significant Increase in Gold Investments

Harvard has also significantly increased its gold investments. It nearly doubled its position in the gold-backed SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) ETF, raising its holdings from 333,000 shares in August to 661,391 shares worth $235.1 million. These strategies highlight the university's emphasis on diversification and risk management in its asset management approach.
