Critical Warning from HAK-İŞ Regarding Minimum Wage

HAK-İŞ President Mahmut Arslan made an important call to the government ahead of the expected minimum wage negotiations, which will start in December. Speaking at the Hizmet-İş Expanded Presidents' Council meeting held in Manavgat, Antalya, Arslan addressed the difficulties and issues experienced in the minimum wage determination process. As a representative of the worker confederations, Arslan emphasized that the current system fails to meet the needs of workers and employees.

During the meeting, Arslan pointed out that there was a consensus among the three worker confederations on the need to restructure the minimum wage commission, stating that the government must take steps for this process to progress healthily. He expressed, “The government should quickly change the commission structure in accordance with the demands of the confederations without waiting until December.”

The uncertainties and ongoing economic difficulties surrounding one of Turkey's most significant social issues, minimum wage, complicate the living conditions of workers and their families. Arslan highlighted the continuing issues regarding social justice and working standards by saying, “We are at the same point after 50 years.” This approach underscores the importance of both labor unions and employers.

Furthermore, Arslan emphasized that the criteria for determining the minimum wage should not be limited to economic data alone, stating, “It should be reevaluated to protect the living standards of the worker.” In this context, considering not only numerical data but also social and humanitarian criteria in determining the minimum wage will help provide a more sustainable life for workers.
