The Governor of the Bank of France, François Villeroy de Galhau, announced that he will leave his position effective June 1, 2026. Villeroy's total term was expected to end in October 2027, immediately following the presidential and general elections.
Villeroy, who also serves on the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB), stated that he did not reject an offer from a foundation focused on youth activities. He described this decision as a "personal" reason.
In his press statement, Villeroy commented, "I believe I will have fulfilled the essence of my mission with a little more than a year remaining in my second term." He also sent a letter to staff at the Bank of France saying, "This decision may come as a surprise to you."
