The Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek drew attention in his recent statements by saying, "Fund engineering is being done," highlighting the extraordinary returns and sharp losses in some hedge funds. Although annual returns exceeding 10% attract investors, concerns have started to rise regarding the serious risks that accompany them.

SPK's Measures May Come into Effect

The President of the Capital Markets Board (SPK) İbrahim Ömer Gönül announced that preparations for regulation have been completed and emphasized that license cancellations could be on the agenda if necessary. There are currently 1,357 hedge funds in Turkey, which have a total size of 8.1 trillion lira. 5.7 million investors are trying to gain potential profits by investing in these funds.

High Return, High Risk

To give examples of some special investment funds that stand out with high returns, the first hedge fund of Tera Portfolio Investment has a return of 10.027%, while the hedge fund of Atlas Portfolio draws attention with a return of 576%. However, some of these funds have experienced losses of up to 51.6% in the last month. The loss of the first hedge fund of Trive Portfolio was 51.6%, the loss of the hedge fund of Allbatross Portfolio was 39.9%, and the loss of the fourteenth hedge fund of İstanbul Portfolio was reported at 33.4%.

Strengthening Oversight Mechanisms is Necessary

Based on his observations, economist Prof. Dr. Şenol Babuşcu states that the weakness of oversight mechanisms leaves investors facing significant risks. He highlights that investment funds have experienced losses of up to 25%, indicating that there is no extraordinary situation. He expressed that it is a natural right for investors to seek legal pathways in the event of significant losses.

Economists emphasize the importance of investors being cautious towards products that promise high returns, while economist Mahfi Eğilmez commented on such investments, saying, "Free cheese is found in a mousetrap."
