The Number of Employees in the Turkish Construction Sector Rises to Historic High

As of September, the number of paid employees in the construction sector reached 2 million 24 thousand 401, marking the highest level of all time. This situation indicates that a record has been set in the sector for the third consecutive month.

According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the total number of paid employees in the industrial, construction, and trade-service sectors increased by 1.1% in September 2023 compared to the same period last year, reaching 16 million 169 thousand 476. In this context, the highest employment increase among sectors was observed in construction.

7.4% Increase in Construction Employment in September 2023

The number of paid employees in the construction sector increased by 7.4% compared to September of last year, showing an increase of 139 thousand 745, reaching 2 million 24 thousand 401. This figure represents the highest recorded number since January 2009.

The number of employees first exceeded 2 million in July, and in August it was recorded as 2 million 10 thousand 953. As of September, 1 million 327 thousand 750 of the employees are engaged in building construction, 260 thousand 592 in the construction of non-building structures, and 436 thousand 59 in special construction activities.

Growth in the Construction Sector Will Continue

Prof. Dr. Sefer Şener, a faculty member of Istanbul University’s Faculty of Economics, stated that the largest contribution to the growth of the Turkish economy in the third quarter of the year came from the construction sector. Despite rising costs, Şener noted that construction investments continue, and the rebuilding efforts in the earthquake-affected areas play a significant role in this increase.

Housing Demand Will Increase in 2026

Şener also pointed out that more favorable financing conditions are expected to be available in 2026, which will increase housing demand. These changes are anticipated to accelerate growth in the construction sector.

Permit Acquisitions in the Earthquake Zone Doubled

Real estate economist Ahmet Büyükduman emphasized that the employment increase is largely due to the intense construction activities in the earthquake-affected areas. The number of permits obtained in September 2022 was 117 thousand 534, while this year it increased by 95.4% to reach 229 thousand 641.
