Happy 102nd Anniversary of Our Republic!

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's famous words, "Gentlemen, tomorrow we will proclaim the Republic," announced that Turkey had entered a new era on October 29, 1923. Today, we celebrate the pride of reaching the 102nd year of our Republic.

October 29: A New Chapter in History

After the liberation of Anatolia from enemy occupation, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT) laid the foundations of a new order by proclaiming the Republic on October 29, 1923. The phrase "Sovereignty unconditionally belongs to the nation" became the fundamental principle of this new regime. Today, as the Turkish nation looks back on 102 years, it experiences the joy of upholding the values of the Republic.

The Honor of the Independence Struggle

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's May 19, 1919 landing in Samsun marked the beginning of the independence struggle, which never dimmed with the determination of the Turkish nation. The existence of the new Turkish state was certified by the Lausanne Treaty, which introduced our country to the international arena.

A New Beginning with the Republic

Before the proclamation of the Republic, the 2nd term of the GNAT began in Ankara on October 13, 1923. At that time, Mustafa Kemal Pasha, who was serving as the head of state, was making plans after a dinner, saying, "Tomorrow, we will proclaim the Republic."

On October 27, 1923, the difficulties faced in forming a cabinet for the acceleration of government projects led to a rapid progression of the process. During this period, the proposal for the proclamation of the Republic was accepted in the GNAT after voting, and at 20:30, the Republic was celebrated with great enthusiasm.

Presidential Election and New Governance

After the proclamation of the Republic, Mustafa Kemal Pasha was elected as the first president of the Republic of Turkey by the GNAT. As the architect of the War of Independence, Atatürk expressed hope for the new era by stating, "The Republic of Turkey will be happy, successful, and victorious." Thus, the governance system was reorganized as a parliamentary regime.

October 29 Celebrated as a National Holiday

With the establishment of the first government, İsmet İnönü was appointed as the president. Celebrations for Republic Day began on October 30. In 1924, the first national holiday was celebrated with 101 cannon shots and events. As of 1925, October 29 was officially recognized as a national holiday by the GNAT.

Today, the Republic of Turkey joyfully celebrates its 102nd anniversary starting from the year 2024.
