Amazon Web Services Returns to Normal Operations

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced that it returned to normal operations on Monday afternoon. This development came after a major internet outage that affected thousands of websites and some popular applications around the world. Platforms like Snapchat and Reddit were among those impacted by the widespread outage.

While it's reassuring that AWS is back online, the company is still working to resolve message backlogs in some systems. This process is expected to take several hours. The effects of the outage were felt worldwide; many workers were offline from London to Tokyo. Even simple tasks, such as making a payment at a hair salon or rebooking flight tickets, came to a standstill.

As of Monday afternoon, users continued to experience issues on platforms like the Venmo digital wallet and Zoom video conferencing service.

This incident has been recorded as the largest internet outage since last year's CrowdStrike failure. Such outages once again highlight the fragility of the digital world. At least three major incidents have occurred in the last five years connected to the US-EAST-1 data center of AWS.

Amazon has not provided additional clarification on why this region is consistently affected. The root cause of the problem has been identified as an issue with the Domain Name System (DNS). The dysfunction of DNS prevented applications from finding the correct address for AWS's DynamoDB API, which is a critical cloud database for data storage.
