Apple’s iPhone model accounted for one in four smartphones sold in China in October, and due to strong demand for the iPhone 17 series, sales recorded a year-on-year increase of 37%.
According to data from the research company Counterpoint, Apple achieved this market share success due to weak competition in the premium segment in 2022. It was noted that smartphone sales across China grew by 8% year-on-year in October, thanks to Apple and local manufacturers.
Analyses show that three different iPhone 17 models stood out with double-digit growth figures ranging from 10% to 20%, with the base model leading the way. Counterpoint senior analyst Ivan Lam stated that the new iPhone models accounted for more than 80% of Apple’s total unit sales. Lam said, “We expect further growth along with rising average selling prices (ASP).”
Moreover, Apple’s momentum indicates the possibility of record-breaking results in the December quarter. Local brands also contributed to the growth in the Chinese smartphone market with the early launch of the 17 series. Xiaomi rose to second place for the first time in over a decade. Oppo experienced a 19% sales increase in October with the Find X9 series and Reno 14 series.
However, Lam also points out that there are risks with the highly anticipated Mate 80 series, which Huawei will launch on November 25. Nevertheless, there is a strong momentum for Apple, and currently, there is no indication of a sharp decline.
