Amazon.com (AMZN) has taken another significant step to minimize food waste. The company has established a strategic partnership with Mill Industries aimed at reducing food waste in Whole Foods Market stores. This collaboration aims to provide pioneering and innovative solutions for food waste management.
At the core of this partnership is Mill's automatic and high-capacity food recycling system, Mill Commercial. Whole Foods plans to be the first user of this system, aiming to manage food waste more efficiently. Starting in 2027, fruit and vegetable waste generated from back office operations will be transformed into a nutrient-rich component for chicken feed, thanks to the technology developed by Mill. This transformation will support Whole Foods’ private label egg suppliers, helping to create a more sustainable supply chain.
Additionally, Mill aims to scale this technology with investments from Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund. This initiative is set to be the first example of an in-store food waste transformation system in the grocery sector, offering a closed-loop solution that enables suppliers to adopt more sustainable practices.
Whole Foods Market continues to lead in promoting responsible and sustainable market practices to nourish people and the planet. This partnership represents a significant step in supporting the company's goal of reducing food waste by 50% by 2030. The actions taken for a sustainable future will provide environmental benefits and offer consumers more conscious choices.
