Amazon has made a decision to significantly reduce the number of employees in the U.S. The company will lay off approximately 16,000 people.
Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of Amazon's Human Resources and Technology Unit, announced that they will offer laid-off employees a 90-day opportunity to find a new position. Additionally, severance and transition support will be provided.
Galetti emphasized that this decision aligns with Amazon's growth strategy and highlighted the importance of helping employees continue their careers. Steps will be taken to reduce layers within the company, increase ownership, and eliminate bureaucracy.
According to the company's statements, new hires and investments will continue in critical areas and functions in the future.
These layoffs follow the 14,000 position reduction announced by the company a few months ago. The continuous layoffs at the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023 have affected a total of approximately 27,000 employees.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy reiterated his determination to reduce management layers and lighten bureaucracy following the excessive hiring during the pandemic period.
As of September 30, Amazon has approximately 1.57 million employees. This number shows that the recent layoffs have affected approximately 4.6% of the total workforce.
