Preparation for the 'Made in Europe' Initiative

The European Union's industrial policy chief Sejourne wrote an op-ed supporting the 'Made in Europe' initiative, which carries the signatures of over 1000 managers from EU companies. This article was published in leading newspapers such as France's Les Echos, Germany's Handelsblatt, Spain's El Mundo, and Italy's Corriere della Sera.

Industrial Policies and Competition

Sejourne argued for prioritizing European companies in public tenders to protect the industries of European countries. "We must establish a real European priority in our most strategic sectors. Without an ambitious and effective industrial policy, the European economy is doomed to become merely a playing field for competitors," he stated.

Attention to the Unfairness of Global Competition

Pointing out that Europe faces challenges such as tariffs, subsidies, export restrictions, and intellectual property violations, Sejourne added, “The EU has no choice now. As trade rules are being redefined, we need to be proactive. International competition has never been this unfair.”

Similarity with Other Economic Powers

Sejourne emphasized that major economic powers like the USA and China have similar programs that prioritize their strategic assets, stating that such measures should also be implemented within the EU.

Importance of the 'Made in Europe' Strategy

He noted that the underlying principle of this strategy is to increase European production and employment in every area where public money is spent in Europe, saying, "This is based on a very simple principle."

Expectation of New Legislation Proposal

The European Commission is expected to announce a 'Industrial Acceleration Law' proposal by the end of February 2024 to support European industry. This proposal is anticipated to include elements that embody the 'Made in Europe' condition in public procurement in EU countries.

Controversial Opinions

While France is in a leading position regarding this initiative, some EU countries share concerns that local product purchasing requirements could hinder international investments and increase prices in public tenders. Turkey argues that it should be included in the 'Made in Europe' concept, taking into account the current Customs Union and level of economic integration.
