The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, emphasized the need for closer cooperation with Scandinavian countries for the success of the EU's defense initiatives.
Von der Leyen stated that they signed a security and defense partnership agreement with Norway and that discussions are ongoing with Iceland. In her speech during the Nordic Council Summit, she highlighted the importance of cooperation with Nordic countries such as Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands.
Von der Leyen warned that Russia's airspace violations threaten Europe's security and expressed that an agreement could not be reached regarding the use of frozen Russian assets for compensation to Ukraine due to Belgium's objections at the EU Leaders Summit held on October 24.
Noting that Russia allocates 9% of its gross domestic product (GDP) to military expenditures, von der Leyen stated, "If we want lasting peace on our continent, Europe needs to have a deterrent power against Russia's aggressions." She also emphasized the economic potential of the Arctic region, indicating that policies regarding this area should be revisited and that more investments are necessary.
