Mandatory Disaster Insurance Meeting in Kahramanmaraş

The Turkish Insurance Association (TSB), the Insurance and Private Pension Regulation and Supervision Authority (SEDDK), and representatives from the Natural Disaster Insurance Agency (DASK) held significant discussions on the occasion of the anniversary of the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023. The meetings focused on strengthening disaster awareness and addressing the vision for Mandatory Disaster Insurance (ZAS) by 2026.

Business Community United for Resilience Against Disasters

SEDDK President Davut Menteş, along with senior management from TSB and DASK Board Chair Hande Akın, visited the Kahramanmaraş Chamber of Commerce and Industry. They discussed necessary steps to combat lack of insurance and rebuild the region's economic structure.

Social Awareness and Insurance Consciousness

Attention was drawn to the need for increased societal awareness against disasters, with the aim of promoting insurance consciousness and enhancing economic resilience. SEDDK President Menteş emphasized the importance of the insurance system for Turkey's future.

Final Stage of Mandatory Disaster Insurance Efforts

Menteş stated that the Mandatory Disaster Insurance in our country will unify natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and forest fires under a single policy and that the system will be implemented in 2026. He also highlighted the importance of the automatic renewal mechanism.

Protection Gap and Strategic Importance

TSB Vice President Ahmet Yaşar pointed out that only 5-6% of the material loss caused by the February 6 earthquakes was covered by insurance, highlighting the issue of lack of insurance in Turkey. Yaşar emphasized that the insurance sector holds strategic importance.

Life Insurance and Economic Security

TSB Board Member Erol Öztürkoğlu underscored the importance of individual insurances that secure survival. He stated that life insurances in Turkey are largely linked to bank loans, while individual preferences remain quite low.

The Role and Achievements of DASK

DASK achieved significant success by making a total payment of 39 billion lira to 519 thousand homes after February 6. DASK Chair Hande Akın highlighted the importance of technological infrastructure throughout this process.

DASK's objectives include increasing the insurance rate and ensuring that policyholders receive coverage based on the actual value of their buildings.
