New Insights on Ethereum's Scalability Strategy

Vitalik Buterin stated that the rollup-centric roadmap initially envisioned during Ethereum's development process has now lost its validity. Buterin expressed that layer-2 solutions were identified as the primary path for Ethereum's scalability, but this approach "no longer makes sense."

Buterin highlighted two main reasons for this situation. First, he emphasized that the expected stage of centralization for layer-2 solutions has been slower and more challenging to reach. Secondly, he noted that Ethereum is scaling directly on layer-1 by itself. He added that he expects transaction fees to remain low in 2026 and gas limits to increase significantly.
