Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that they have initiated a strategic infrastructure project to construct a high-capacity heavy freight railway line that will connect the European and Asian sides of Istanbul. He stated that the tender announcement for the Istanbul Northern Railway Crossing Project is planned to be made within this year.
Speaking at the "New Silk Way" 7th International Transport and Logistics Business Forum held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Uraloğlu emphasized that the Russia-Ukraine War has reshaped energy markets and logistics between Europe and Asia. Now, while the classic 'Northern Corridor' is less preferred, the Middle Corridor and Southern routes are gaining prominence. However, he stated that these crossings have not achieved sufficient efficiency due to infrastructure deficiencies and management inadequacies.
Uraloğlu stressed that climate change is also an important agenda item. He noted that the problems in the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal revealed the fragile nature of sea transportation, which increased the value of land and railway lines. He drew attention to the growing need for resilient and sustainable infrastructures.
Uraloğlu stated that the Middle Corridor is the shortest route from China to Europe and that a 30% increase in China-EU trade is projected through this line by 2030. He pointed out that this situation, along with reduced costs and shortened delivery times, will also reduce carbon emissions.
Finally, Uraloğlu, providing information that Turkey is a natural logistics bridge between Asia and Europe, stated that they are taking steps to develop regional trade by utilizing this strategic advantage. In August, Turkey laid the foundations for the Turkish section of the Zangezur Connection between Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.
