The President of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, held critical meetings in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, with King Carl XVI Gustaf, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, and former Prime Minister Carl Bildt.
After the meetings, Birol emphasized that the stagnation period of the nuclear industry in Europe following the Fukushima accident in Japan has come to an end and that it has begun to revive. He particularly highlighted Sweden's significance in this area.
In his meeting with King Gustaf, Birol stated that they discussed important topics such as nuclear energy, clean energy technologies, electric vehicles, and climate change. He also thanked them for their support of the IEA's activities.
During his meeting with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Birol congratulated him on the innovations in Sweden’s nuclear energy policy and noted that the country plans to construct 2.5 gigawatts of new nuclear power plants within the next 10 years. They had a fruitful discussion about energy security in Europe and the global development of nuclear energy.
In his talk titled "World Energy Outlook" at the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, Birol emphasized the transformation in the energy sector. He pointed out that the age of electricity has begun, highlighting the increasing importance of renewable energy and nuclear energy, while underscoring that critical minerals must play a vital role in the new energy order.
Additionally, Birol met with former Prime Minister Carl Bildt to discuss European and global issues in the context of energy security.
