Geographical Indications and Inspection Deficiencies in Turkey

The President of the Local Products and Geographical Indications Research Network (YUCİTA), Prof. Dr. Yavuz Tekelioğlu, emphasized the necessity of establishing an inspection regulation for products with geographical indication registration nationwide. Tekelioğlu highlighted that this system would revitalize Turkey's economic potential. He stated that a healthy inspection system should be established in Turkey, just as it is around the world. He also drew attention to the importance of establishing an independent institute for geographical indications.

Global Market and Protection Strategies

Tekelioğlu indicated that geographical indications have reached a global sales value of 300 billion dollars. He mentioned that this figure is approximately 100 billion euros in the European Union. He underscored that the protection of products with geographical indications is critical for safeguarding consumers and producers from counterfeit products.

Consumer and Producer Protection

Tekelioğlu stated, “Registration protects both consumers and producers, preventing unfair competition. However, although current laws define the rights of the registrant, they do not clearly outline their responsibilities.” He noted that this situation leads to certificates remaining merely hung on walls after registration. He emphasized the importance of applying self-inspection and external inspection practices in production processes, stressing the necessity of independent certification bodies compliant with European Union criteria.

Issues with Registered Products

Tekelioğlu expressed that the current inspection problems in Turkey have resulted in only 5-10 out of 1800 registered products operating at European standards, indicating a significant loss for the country. He stated, “We must evaluate this potential by producing quality products. It is essential to address legal gaps and establish good governance.”

Conclusion: Proposal for a New Structure

Tekelioğlu emphasized that the fate of geographical indications is critically important for the country's future. “Turkey cannot be compared to any other country that has such potential. However, we must reveal this potential with a sound inspection structure. Therefore, an independent institution and a geographical indications institute must be established,” he said.
