Significant steps taken in the preservation of cultural heritage are frequently on the agenda in Turkey. The latest initiative resulted in the rescue of more than 900,000 cultural artifacts from being taken out of the country. The program held in this context took place in the Bodrum district of Muğla.
The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, emphasized Turkey's decisive stance against cultural heritage trafficking in his speech at the event. Minister Ersoy indicated that this initiative, known as the "Red List," which identifies cultural assets at risk, would provide significant contributions not only for Turkey but also for the international community.
Cultural property trafficking is regarded as an organized crime that causes the disconnection of these artifacts from their context and the destruction of scientific data. Ersoy pointed out that this crime has become a matter of national security in today's world. Moreover, he highlighted that this type of trafficking has been defined by the United Nations Security Council as a serious instrument used in the financing of terrorism.
Having such a comprehensive cultural heritage protection strategy in Turkey emphasizes not only a matter for today but also for the future. Our country acts with great awareness at both national and international levels in the preservation of its rich cultural heritage inherited from the past. Thus, it aims not only to prevent losses but also to strengthen international cooperation and set an example for other countries in combating this issue.
As Ersoy pointed out, the "Red List" supports Turkey's efforts to protect its most significant cultural heritage, contributing to the preservation of cultural assets worldwide. This situation underlines Turkey's contribution to the cultural mission on the international stage.
