TurkStat (Turkish Statistical Institute) has updated the consumer price index (CPI) basket used in inflation calculations. Each year, prices collected from households and workplaces are updated, and the products in the basket are revised to better reflect the consumption habits of society.
As a result of the studies carried out, 2025 has been designated as the new base year by TurkStat. Changing the base year simplifies the interpretation of price indices while enhancing international comparability and preventing excessive growth in the index level.
With the new base year, a classification system reflecting the updated consumption patterns, called COICOP-2018, has been adopted. This system provides a more accurate representation of household consumption expenditures.
As of this year, 51.14% of the price data in the basket will be collected through field data collection methods. For CPI calculations, prices will be gathered from a total of 39,070 workplaces and 5,246 residences (rent) for 972 product types, totaling 636,640 prices each month.
According to the updates, 38 new items have been added to the basket this year, while 30 products have been removed. New items include simit (a type of bread), regional cheeses, and school uniforms, while products like cocoa and bread dough have been removed from the list.
With the updates carried out by TurkStat, the distribution of main group weights has also changed. The weight of food and non-alcoholic beverages has decreased from 24.96% to 24.44%, while the weight of housing and energy expenditures has dropped from 15.21% to 11.40%. Meanwhile, the weight of transportation has increased from 15.34% to 16.62%.
With the new classification, categories such as insurance and financial services will also be included in CPI calculations. These changes to items provide a structure that is more aligned with current household consumption preferences.
These updates by TurkStat bring a more modern and valid approach to inflation calculations in Turkey. With the new regulations, consumers' shopping habits will be reflected more accurately, and inflation rates will become more transparent.
